What is sequential turbocharging, and why should you care?

Forced induction has one goal: more power, delivered cleanly across the whole RPM range. Getting there without lag or top-end drop-off has always meant a compromise.

The trade-off

  • One big turbo makes monster top-end but struggles down low.
  • One small turbo spools fast but runs out of breath up top.
  • Even twin setups rarely let two different frame sizes work in full sequence.

How the STM handles it

The Hlava STM pairs two completely different-size turbos and runs them sequentially. At low RPM the small turbo spools instantly for usable torque with no lag. As exhaust energy builds, the manifold transitions flow to the large turbo, which takes over for top-end power. You stay in the powerband from idle to redline.

The design is universal. It adapts to a wide range of engines and turbo pairings rather than being tied to one platform, so it drops into street builds, race cars, and off-road setups alike.

Why it matters

Because the small turbo only handles the low end and the large one is not bogged down until it is needed, each unit runs in its ideal efficiency window. That means better response, cleaner power delivery, and the ability to dial in a setup that older one-off sequential systems never allowed.
