Andrew Hlava didn’t set out to become an inventor. He set out to become a mechanic — and a good one. The patented Hlava STM is what twenty years under the hood turned that into.
The real classroom
A year before finishing formal training, Andrew was already turning wrenches professionally. He completed his automotive systems education at Universal Technical Institute in 2005 — but by then the real classroom was already engine bays, dynos, and the unforgiving feedback loop of a car that either runs right or doesn’t.
Eight years of hard-won knowledge
Engine systems. Fuel delivery. Forced induction. Drivetrains. Every car through the shop taught him how these systems behaved — and, more importantly, how they failed.
A shop of his own
While on the road to earning ASE Master Tech, Advanced Engine Performance Specialist and Undercar Specialist status, Andrew founded his own high-performance automotive engineering business.
The problem that wouldn’t let go
The same wall, day after day: turbocharging had limitations no amount of tuning could engineer around. A compromise between response and top-end power. With this compromise baked into the hardware, he started sketching a sequential architecture that didn’t manage those limits; it eliminated them at the source.
Seven years, no shortcuts
Not a garage weekend project. Seven years of methodical, hands-on R&D run in parallel with a full-time business. Design. Test. Fail. Redesign. Test again.
First patent filed
With the architecture ready to protect, Andrew filed his first U.S. patent application for the apparatus itself.
The method, protected too
A second, divisional application — covering the method of controlling exhaust gas delivery between turbochargers. A deliberate strategy: protect not just the invention, but the way it works.

Covering the turbocharger manifold, system, and method.
Patent 12,228,069 B2 granted
Covering the method of exhaust gas delivery between turbochargers. Andrew had become the inventor of the world’s only patented universal sequential turbocharging manifold.

With the design proven in metal and validated on the dyno, Andrew founded Hlava Technologies to formally commercialize twelve years of forced-induction research and carry the STM from proven prototype toward OEM-grade production.
